About Fez, Morocco

During the Idrisid dynasty's reign in the 8th and 9th centuries CE, Fez was established. At first, two separate communities were at odds with one another. The city's distinctive Arab flavor was brought to it by successive waves of predominantly Arab immigrants from Ifriqiya (modern-day Tunisia) and al-Andalus (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 9th century.

After the Idrisid dynasty fell, subsequent empires came and went until the Almoravid Sultan Yusuf ibn Tashfin unified the two cities into the modern-day Fes el-Bali neighborhood in the 11th century. The city's status as a center of religious scholarship and trade flourished during the Almoravid era.

Fez regained its position as the political capital during the Marinid era (13th-15th centuries). Many new madrasas and mosques were built, still standing today.

The buildings you see here are classic examples of Moorish and Moroccan design. The Royal Palace (Dar al-Makhzen) and enormous gardens were also established in the 1276 administrative district of Fes Jdid, which the Marinid ruler Abu Yusuf Yaqub had also constructed.

Jewish settlement in the city expanded during this time, and the Mellah (Jewish quarter) emerged on the district's southern edge. After overthrowing the Marinid monarchy, Fez declined and competed with Marrakesh for political and cultural power. Under the Alawi (Alaouite) dynasty, it served as the capital once again from 750 to 1912.

Modern Fes comprises the historic medinas of Fes el-Bali and Fes Jdid and the considerably larger Ville Nouvelle district established by the French during their colonial rule. The ancient Fez medina has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the largest urban pedestrian zones in the world.

The University of Al-Qarawiyyin may be found there; it was established in 857 and is sometimes cited as the first surviving university.
